ZOOMINAR 0020:AN EMBARRASING VISIT TO THE GASTROENTEROLOGIST

Summary

Nada Layyous explains a smorgasbord of symptoms, which the famed gastroenterologist finds intriguing. Diarrhea, constipation, belly swelling, painful esophagus and throat irritation, and difficulty sleeping. Diabetes crosses his mind.

Dr. Oldcomer quizzes her on her diet, the timing of their meal schedule and the time of the onset of the pain in her esophagus and throat.

After examining her throat, he at once sees what he has seen a million times before, an intense inflammation of the back of her throat.

Dr Oldcomer requests a stool sample, but the patient is not familiar with this expression. The doctor requests that the Interpreter explain the word “stool” to the patient in a way she can understand.

Dr. Oldcomer is interested in doing a colonoscopy and endoscopy which the patient is not thrilled about.

The doctor arranges for the procedures and wants to see the patient again in two weeks. He arranges for tests to be done also, and prescribes a medication. An average type of appointment but traumatic for the patient.
